Emergency Management

Hurricane Season begins June 1st. Are you and your family prepared to weather the storm?

Experiences of the past have demonstrated that it is vital that every family maintain enough food and water to survive for a minimum of five (5) days.

    COMMUNICATION PLAN

Every family should establish a Communication Plan which specifies contact information for an out of town contact person. Include meeting locations, phone numbers for work, school and emergency services. A sample form can be found at www.ready.gov or at www.redcross.org. Be sure each family member has a copy of your communication plan and post it near your telephone for use in an emergency.

    EVACUATION

The City of West Park is not located in a hurricane evacuation zone, therefore, most residents should NOT evacuate unless you:

1. live in a mobile home; or
2. live in an unsafe structure.

If your home is unsafe, residents should then consider staying with family or friends who live close by. Residents may seek out an ARC shelter as a last resort. The closest shelters to the City of West Park are:

Watkins Elementary School
3520 SW 52nd Avenue, Pembroke Park
New Renaissance Middle School
10701 Miramar Boulevard, Miramar

If you choose to evacuate the area, please keep in mind that you must leave well in advance of the storm approaching land. Traffic congestion will likely make the movement out of South Florida very difficult.

      AFTER A HURRICANE

It is essential that every resident maintain a five day supply of food and water at home. For long term disaster situations, the city will seek to provide life sustaining emergency relief supplies to residents at Raymond P. Oglesby Preserve / Independence Park at Pembroke Park located at 3115 52nd Avenue. As supplies arrive in South Florida, the cities will notify the media that emergency supplies are available

and provide hours of operation and locations for distribution of supplies. Due to disaster conditions, the city may be forced to relocate the point of distribution to an alternate location. Keep your battery operated radio on hand to listen to the important media updates.

      SEEKING VOLUNTEER AMATEUR RADIO OPERATORS

The City of West Park is currently seeking volunteer “Amateur Radio Operators” to staff the Emergency Operations Center. In the event that all communications are destroyed, amateur radio may become the only means to communicate with the County Emergency Operation Center and other response and recovery organizations. Volunteers should be licensed to perform this role.
